'Fortnite' Chapter 2, Season 2 release date, themes, map changes, and more

The conclusion to Fortnite: Battle Royale Season 10 marked the end of an era for Epic Games' hit video game, and Chapter 2 continues to defy expectations two months later by going and going with no definitive end in sight. Will Chapter 2, Season 2 ever come? Will anybody call it Chapter 12? How much the map evolve between now and then? What will the theme be? The future of Fortnite feels uncertain, especially after all that's changed in recent months.

After the Fortnite world was sucked into some kind of black hole during an October event called "The End," it spat out a whole new universe for gamers to play in.

Formerly, a Fortnite season would last anywhere between 10 and 12 weeks and conclude with some kind of geological event, supernatural cataclysm, or some other shake-up to introduce changes to the map that coincide with a particular theme. These days, things are a bit different.

Here's everything we know about Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2:

In late November, Epic Games announced an extension for Chapter 2, Season 1 in a blog post.

"Last year we celebrated 14 Days of Fortnite over the holidays," the post reads. "This year we've got even more content for you to unwrap, including new game features, free rewards and a live experience that you won't want to miss. To prepare for all the new holiday-themed updates, we will be extending Chapter 2's first season into early February. Get ready for winter!"

There's no real way to know what the theme of next season will be just yet, mainly because it won't arrive for another two months. There's an in-game Star Wars event on December 14 ahead of The Rise of Skywalker's release, and the November blog post implied that there will either be another 14 Days of Fortnite event, or a similar holiday celebration.

Last year, February saw the launch of the pirate-themed Season 8 which added a volcano to the map after the wintery Season 7 brought snowstorms and the Ice King. Assuming the rest of Chapter 2, Season 1 involves winter-related activities, the next seasons will likely pivot to a new theme that heats things up.

How much will the Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 2 battle pass cost?

Fortnite: Battle Royale has always been free to play, but any players that want access to the premium battle pass and all its associated challenges will have to pay for it. This battle pass continues to cost 950 V-Bucks (the in-game currency also used to purchase cosmetics from the Item Shop). That converts to about $9.50, but most players will have to buy a bundle that costs $9.99 for 1,000 V-Bucks. Purchasing larger bundles of V-Bucks grants an increasing discount, so in theory, it might cost someone less than $9.50.

If someone has a premium battle pass, they can usually earn enough V-Bucks via battle pass rewards to pay for the next one.

Fortnite Chapter 2, Season 1 will run until early February.
